About
Reality leaves evidence.
Generated and altered media is now ordinary. A photo or video, on its own, no longer tells you where it came from. OWNEYES was built around a simple response: capture the evidence at the moment of recording, not after the fact.
Every OWNEYES capture carries its own record of how it was made - the device it came from, the motion it recorded, the moment it was registered, and a cryptographic fingerprint of the exact original file. That record establishes provenance and consistency. It does not tell a viewer what to believe about the subject of a capture, and it is not designed to.
OWNEYES is also, deliberately, a home for the kind of footage people are most often asked to disbelieve - unexplained sightings, strange lights, things caught by chance. The authenticity network and the research archive are kept separate on purpose: one verifies how media was captured, the other collects and sources research about what people report seeing. They are never the same claim.
Principles
- —Capture belongs to the app. The website discovers, verifies, and explains - it never fabricates an authenticated capture.
- —Location and identity are disclosed only with explicit consent, and only as far as the owner chooses.
- —A verification result is evidence about origin, never a judgment about truth.
- —No status is ever described as impossible to fake.
